Our 'core and satellite' approach

Our approach involves using index or enhanced index investments as the core of a portfolio, with actively managed satellite investments to complement the core.

  • Core

The core portion of the portfolios (which makes up the majority) is managed passively (ie index or enhanced index).

For core investments we seek to achieve investment returns equal to the return of the relevant financial market or benchmark.
  • Satellite

The satellites are actively managed investments with the aim to exceed the returns of the market within a risk-controlled framework.

Active equity investment management involves looking for mispricing in markets. Mispricing occurs when a company's share price is considered to be lower than the company’s real value.

VicSuper uses active investment strategies to invest in Australian and International listed shares and fixed interest.

To invest VicSuper Fund's assets, we appoint specialist external investment managers. All of the Fund's assets are externally managed.

Selecting and monitoring managers

Each of VicSuper’s investment managers looks after one or a number of VicSuper’s investments and is selected based on their specialist skills.

Selection follows extensive internal and independent external research and assessment.

As part of the selection process, VicSuper factors in each manager’s approach to integrating ESG factors and whether they are a signatory to the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).

Managers are expected to provide evidence through case studies of ESG integration in their investment decision making.

Investment managers are assessed on an ongoing basis against their respective benchmarks (usually an index) and performance is reported to VicSuper’s Investment Committee and Trustee monthly.

Investment trust arrangements

VicSuper also invests in unlisted investment trusts which are managed independently of VicSuper.

An investment trust allows a number of individual investors to pool their money with that of other investors.

This provides VicSuper with access to a wide range of investments in listed equities including companies rated as sustainability leaders, private equity and real assets (property, infrastructure, agriculture and timber).
