Three steps to a better retirement

Whether you have retired by choice or have had to take an early retirement for whatever reason, by approaching things a little differently, it is possible to make your retirement a happy one. Following these three simple steps could help:

Number 1

Work out how long your income needs to last – the first thing to think about is how long you think you will need an income for. Improvements in medical care, diet and living standards have all contributed to an increase in life expectancy, especially for people aged over 65. To calculate your estimated life expectancy, use our simple calculator

Number 2Prepare a simple budget – one way to try and preserve your retirement income as much as possible is to create a simple budget and split it into your ‘Needs’ and ‘Wants’. You may also want to think about any lump sums you might want to put away to cover any unforeseen costs and consider how your needs may change at different stages of your life. For example, you may want to spend more early in your retirement and less later, or vice versa. Our VicSuper budgeting calculator is a great tool to help you get started.

Number 3Identify your income sources – it is important to review your situation regularly. Your retirement income is likely to come from a range of sources such as the Age Pension, your superannuation savings and any savings you may hold outside of your super. VicSuper can help you meet your income needs in retirement through our Retirement Income Solution. We can even help you maximise any Age Pension payments that you may be entitled to.

Great value advice

At VicSuper, we believe that everyone is entitled to great quality advice. That’s why we offer our superannuation advice at no charge to members in most instances, and only $200 to non-members. Whatever your situation, it is important that you consider your options in detail. Our expert financial planners can help you make sense of the decisions you need to make and work with you to develop a retirement income solution tailored to your situation. We don’t pay commissions to our planners, and you can trust that the advice you receive has your best interests at heart. But don’t just listen to us, 99.9% of members surveyed would recommend VicSuper’s advice service to their family and friends*.

* Results based on members who had Statements of Advice prepared and who completed an Interview Evaluation form between July 2014 to June 2015. 1,501 of 1,502 of those surveyed would recommend VicSuper.
