#1 Know what you need

Feeling confident about your retirement planning starts with knowing how long you’re likely to need an income and how much income you’re likely to need each year.

A person who’s 65 today has a pretty good chance of living into their 90s. If you’re a couple the chance of at least one of you living into your 90s is even higher.*

When budgeting, it’s also worth splitting your ‘needs’ from your ‘wants’.

What you spend now is likely to be a good indicator of your income needs in the future – bearing in mind that as people get older their income needs generally change. For example, travel costs may decrease, but health costs may increase.

We’ve created an easy calculator that can help you get a realistic idea of your income needs. It also provides indicative figures for a modest lifestyle in retirement.
