Integrating sustainability into our everyday operations is an important part of building a sustainable super fund.

This includes the operations' impact on the environment as well as social aspects such as staff satisfaction and engagement.

By minimising our use of natural resources and reducing the environmental impact of our activities we will help to ensure there are resources left for the future, protect the functioning of ecosystems and also reduce our operating costs. At the same time we undertake measures to increase staff satisfaction and productivity because ultimately this will help us build a stronger and more sustainable super fund. Some examples of our sustainability activities include:

Staff

  • Our priority is to provide a positive working environment that is safe, productive and rewarding. For more information on our culture, values and workplace benefits, see Careers.
  • Everyone who works at VicSuper sets specific sustainability goals in their annual performance plan.
  • We offer employees different ways in which to grow professionally and personally through our community involvement program.

Energy

  • We have put in place energy efficiency measures such as lighting sensors, energy-efficient lights, removal of lights in over-lit areas and use of web-based servers. These measures also reduce our operating costs.

Greenhouse gas emissions

  • Our objective is to be carbon neutral for all of our operations from the 2007/08 financial year onwards. For VicSuper, managing the carbon impact of our operations is not simply a matter of purchasing offsets for the emissions that our operations produce. Our goal is to improve our efficiency by reducing our carbon emissions in the first instance and then purchasing offsets for any remaining emissions.

Paper & office equipment

  • All white office paper used for internal photocopying and printing is sourced from 100% recycled content.
  • Recycled content or sustainability produced paper is used when printing all external publications.
  • A comprehensive recycling system is set up in all VicSuper offices. This includes paper and cardboard, organic waste, toner cartridges and co-mingled recycling.
  • All disused computer equipment is recycled through B2C Recyclers, who distribute donated computer equipment to local and international communities in need. Where it cannot be reused, the equipment is stripped down and recycled, thus reducing the amount of waste ending up in landfill.

Transport

  • Hybrid fuel cars have been purchased for all VicSuper's cars.
  • Staff are encouraged to use public transport rather than a VicSuper vehicle or taxi. Public transport tickets are available for staff to use when travelling to out-of-office meetings.
  • VicSuper's Bicycle Users Group (BUG) was launched in December 2007. This is an informal group for bicycle users at VicSuper.

Decision making

  • Social, environmental and economic impacts are taken into account in the decisions made by the Trustee.
